Charlottesville, Virginia, United States
City officials in Charlottesville, Virginia are investigating following the detection of high levels of E. coli bacteria in Meade Creek. The Rivanna Conservation Alliance detected the bacteria in a recent sample of water taken from a part of the creek not far from Meade Park.At this time, people are advised to avoid contact with the water, as exposure to E. coli can cause illness. Meade Creek begins below Garden Street and Walnut Street in the Belmont area and heads north in an underground pipe before resurfacing east of 12th Street NE and flowing through Meade Park before reaching the Rivanna River.
Officials are attempting to identify the source of the contamination and address the issue. It is typically an indicator of sewage or animal waste contamination when E. coli is detected in water.
