Georgian Bay's Stewart Lake Beach has become the sole swimming area in Muskoka currently under a swimming advisory. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) officials have emphasized that the beach is not closed, but caution swimmers about the potential risks associated with swimming in the area. The advisory highlights the possibility of developing minor skin, eye, ear, nose, or throat infections, as well as stomach illnesses. As a precautionary measure, individuals are advised to avoid submerging themselves underwater or swallowing the water if they choose to take a dip.Water samples from every beach in SMDHU’s medical region are taken on a weekly basis between June 19 and Sept. 4. The water samples are tested for E. coli bacteria and a swimming advisory may be put in place if the bacteria levels are above 200 E. coli per 100 mL of water.
The swimming advisory for Stewart Lake Beach was implemented on July 11, raising concerns among residents and visitors to the area. The SMDHU's primary objective in issuing the advisory is to safeguard public health and minimize the potential for illness or infection. While the advisory remains in place, it serves as a reminder to exercise caution and take necessary steps to protect oneself from any health risks associated with swimming in the area.
