Respiratory protection The employer requires workers use respirators depending on task. Employer did not provide medical evaluations or a fit testing. Spray finishing Primarily compressed air and airless systems are used with solvent paints and epoxies. No power coatings. Paint (Particulates) frequently migrate into the break room, which is adjacent to the spray booth/room area. - Workers often use the spray room without required respiratory protection. - Workers suffer fatigue after spraying paint with zinc. Sand-Blasting Separate building (shed) Dedicated dust collector and ductwork is not maintained (cleaned and serviced). Sand blasting and paint debris can be seen escaping ductwork into the storm drains. - Safety Training Employer includes Confined Space, Fall protection, COVID 19, and various operating certificates (forklift, man lift, etc.). Employer often asks EE's who have not been trained to operate equipment as a workaround to completing projects on time. Untrained EE's perform tasks that require training because they feel obligated in order to keep their job. There are many employees operating machinery without proper training or certifications. Safety Meetings: Business employs 20-30. No weekly safety meetings are conducted. No sign in or records of meetings are known of. There is no safety committee Flammable Storage and Handling This may include paints, thinners, and epoxies. Opened solvents are piled up at the entrance to shop instead of placed in storage location at the main shop. A separate site facility is used to store additional flammable materials with same housekeeping issues. General physical safety hazards include slip trip hazards on the floor due to buildup of paint and paint debris. Workers had to climb on top of unsafe trailers and other projects to either paint or sand blast and were not provided fall protection: harness tie ins or proper scaffolding.
